Sophia's First Ice Cream Cone

After dinner on Monday, I promised Samantha that we could have something special for our dessert.  She was terribly confused as I bustled around the kitchen, stacking dishes and wiping down the counters after we finished eating.  She questioned why I was cleaning up when we hadn't had our special dessert yet.

There might have been a twinkle in my eye, sensing how excited she would be as I quickly replied, "Don't worry.  Once your toys are all picked up, we are going to have our dessert outside."  She did a little dance and my heart skipped a beat, realizing how very little it takes to make her happy.

And then she spied them -- two perfect little ice cream cones lined up on the counter.  One for her and one for Sophia.  Yes, Sophia got to have her first ice cream cone this week.

Now, Sam was much older when I first let her have one.  The biggest reason is that I just never kept ice cream cones on hand in the pantry.  But, we do now ... and Sophia was not going to be happy just watching as Sam ate one.  So I gave in and stripped Sophia down to her diaper and we headed outside.

This was taken after her very first taste.  (She has had ice cream before; this was her first time having it in a cone).

And, Sam is just an expert now.  There was no need to strip her down ...

Within a span of a couple of minutes, Sophia was acting like she had been having ice cream cones her whole life.  She just knew what to do.

Sure, she dribbled a little and reached for the cloth immediately.

But it didn't stop her from continuing to eat.

In fact, when she needed to stretch her legs, she just took the cone with her.

Samantha finished with her ice cream cone long before Sophia did, but that didn't matter.  Sam worked on some chalk creations and Sophia stayed close by ... still continuing to eat her cone.

Steve was gone to a baseball game, so it was just us girls and we had such a good time.  I just let the girls play outside for a while when they were finished eating.  It was such a nice evening and I knew that they would be getting baths after we went inside.  They were both covered in sticky ice cream, chalk and some dirt thrown in for good measure, but it was well worth it!
