The Tie-Dye Family

My brother, Zach, surprised the girls with a craft project last week.  He mailed them a tie-dye kit and a package of shirts!

Steve was just as excited as the girls to do this little project last weekend, so I made a trip to the store and bought a few more shirts so that everyone could participate.  It was a big undertaking (washing, soaking, staining, rinsing, drying), but the girls remained patient.  And it was so worth it!

My only regret at this time -- we didn't have a onesie to tie-dye for Jack!

Carrying the load of shirts (clean from the washer) to soak in soda ash:

The soda ash (sodium carbonate) helps the stain to adhere better to the shirts:

Steve set up an enclosed screen tent in the front yard to provide a little bit of shade for our project.  There was NO WAY we were going to attempt this inside the house!

Rolling up the shirts.  We used some rubber bands and some string.

Explaining the procedure (and rules) to the girls:

Sophia was pouting because she wanted to do it all by herself:

And then she got her chance:

Sam was a natural:

We let the shirts sit in grocery bags over night and then took them apart and rinsed them.  (It was raining at the time so Sam was wearing her rain coat):

This was Samantha's special responsibility because both Sophia and Jack were still napping:

More and more shirts:

We couldn't resist trying on a few shirts:

What a fun project for our whole family!
