Our Birthday Week

The end of February brings with it a lot of parties, a lot of cake and a lot of cards and gifts.  Steve's birthday is the 25th, Sophia's is the 26th and mine is the 27th.  Yes, back-to-back-to-back.

With Steve's birthday falling on a Tuesday (one of the nights that I teach), we opted to celebrate the night before.  We grilled chicken and feasted on that along with some oven-diced potatoes and steamed broccoli.  I made blueberry muffins for dessert (we had had enough cake from the weekend) and the girls helped put candles in them.  We hung a banner and balloons and wrapped Daddy's gifts before he got home.

Blowing out the candles (with lots of help):

Jack got to sample some of the blueberry muffins.  It is safe to say that he LOVED them ... and cried when we took them away to open presents.

Opening presents -- a new Detroit Tigers shirt (with the old English D colored in camo), an engraved key chain with the kids' names, a gift certificate for a massage and a 6-pack of "pop" for Daddy.

On Sophia's birthday, she woke up to some presents in the kitchen, just waiting for her to open before we had to take Samantha to school.  They were gifts that Sam and Steve had chosen.  It was the perfect way to start her day!

Sophia got to have a strawberry waffle with 3 candles in it for breakfast -- rushed school mornings call for simple breakfasts!

After we picked Sam up from school at noon, I took the kids to Culver's for lunch.  The girls love going there before they always get ice cream as part of their kid's meal.  Sophia chose M&Ms for her topping and Sam chose oreos, of course.

When we were getting ready to leave, one of the workers (Miss Patti) came over to wish Sophia a happy birthday and asked me if she could bring Sophia a little more ice cream and sing Happy Birthday to her.  I thought that it was a fabulous idea.

Sophia, on the other hand, didn't know what to do!  She was so confused and covered her ears.  Later, she told her dad that she was "so nervous."  So funny!!!

As soon as we got back home, Sophia got to open her gifts from Jack and me because I had to teach later that night.  Jack had so much fun helping her!  He's at the perfect stage for that right now.

I'm pretty sure that Jack thought that it was his birthday.

A light-up mermaid costume from Momma.  Sophia said that it was "itchy," so we will have to be sure that she wears it OVER another shirt, I guess.

Playing with the Play-Doh set that Steve had gotten for Sophia.  It squeezes the play-doh out into various shapes, including strings of spaghetti.  (This provided a full hour of entertainment after naps that afternoon).

Sophia received this surprise from Uncle Jake and Alyssa -- a pop-up princess castle.  This is another major source of entertainment these days.

Finally, my birthday was on Thursday.  By then, most everyone is tired of celebrating and we usually just have a low-key event.  Like last year, I opened my gifts after Sam got home from dance class.  It's hard to imagine that at this exact time last year, Jack was still in my belly ...

We have one more family party this weekend to wrap up the celebrations and then we need to begin decorating our house for St. Patrick's Day.  Sam tells me that she loves that holiday because everything is green ... and green is her favorite color.  It's Momma's favorite color too!
