Holiday Hopes

I had the idea this year to put together a "Holiday Hopes" poster with the kids.  It is basically a "bucket list" for the holidays, but they were not as apt to understand what a "busket list" was ... hence, the new term.

On a scrap sheet of paper, the kids each contributed some ideas of things that they would like to do during the holidays.  Some of them are traditions anyway and some of them were new.

Then, I wrote them out on a poster and drew pictures that Jack later colored.  His coloring skills are spot-on, I have to say!

The poster is hanging in our hallway where we walk by it multiple times per day, and the kids have had a blast crossing things off and scheduling some of the other events.  In fact, it has been so fun that I have decided that this alone is going to be a TRADITION for us each year!

One of the things that I added to the list was making bird seed ornaments.  We had never done this before and I thought that it might be something special that we could do together and then be able to make some friendly little birds happy during this cold time of year.

The idea is very simple -- bird seed, melted crisco, a spoon and some cookie cutters.

Once mixed, the seed mixture is scooped into cookie cutters and allowed to harden in the freezer.

You need to use a straw to poke a hole in the top of the mold before freezing so that you have a place to string your twine through later.

Our batch made at least 12 good-sized ornaments.

It can be gooey, so I was sure to use a disposable tablecloth, paper plates and wax paper.

In the end, I decided that I needed to use LESS melted Crisco (or more bird seed).  Our ornaments did not harden as much as I would have liked, so we ended up with several clumps of seed for the birds.  They loved it though!
