Our First ER Visit

Right after lunch today, Samantha fell off the couch and hit her head on the coffee table. I was in the other room when it happened, and as soon as I heard the crying, I took off running. As I held her in my arms, trying to console her, I ran my hand over her head and felt the lump immediately.

Within 30 seconds, it had swollen and turned blue. I sent the following picture to Steve via my phone:

After one look at that picture, Steve told me to gather the girls and head for the ER. I never moved so fast in my life!

I called Sam's doctor on the way, and the office also advised me to head for the ER. I just didn't want to take any chances with a head injury and I didn't want Sam to fall asleep, even though it was naptime.

The girls and I arrived at the ER around 1:30 pm, and Steve met us there five minutes later. I just wasn't sure how long we would be there and preferred that he be with me to assist with Sophia.

It turns out that the pediatric wing of the hospital is very quick and I was home with the girls by 3 pm!

Sam waiting to be seen by a doctor:

By then, a lot of the swelling had gone down and Sam seemed to be doing fine (except for complaining that her head hurt, of course). The doctor explained that it was good that we came to get her checked out, but that because the injury was sustained near the front of her head and she wasn't throwing up or exhibiting any other symptoms, that we could be discharged.

Sitting with Daddy (a little blurry because it was taken via my phone):

She has had a little tylenol and seems to be back to her old self. It will take a few days for all of the swelling to go down ... and many more days for the black and blueness to disappear completely.

You can hardly see the injury in this picture tonight, even though it is still there:

I am SO thankful that she is ok ... Better safe than sorry!
